Handwriting boosts brain connectivity

For learning and memory, pens may be mightier than keyboards

BY CLAUDIA LÓPEZ LLOREDA

Writing out the same word again and again in cursive may bring back bad memories for some people, but handwriting can boost connectivity across brain regions that are implicated in learning and memory, a new study shows.

When college students wrote words by hand, connectivity across the brain- particularly in brain waves associated with memory formation – increased compared with when students typed the words, researchers report January 26 in Frontiers in Psychology.

The finding shows that “there is a fundamental difference in brain organization for handwriting as opposed to typing,” says neuroscientist Ramesh Balasubramaniam of the University of California, Merced, who was not involved in the research.

It also adds to growing evidence of handwriting’s benefits. Previous research has shown that handwriting improves spelling accuracy, memory recall and conceptual understanding. Scientists think that the slow process of tracing out letters and words gives individuals more time to process the material and that the intricate movement itself aids learning.

In the new study, psychologists Audrey van der Meer and Ruud Vander Weel, both of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, recruited 36 students from the university and stuck a cap of electrodes on their heads. The researchers asked the students to type or handwrite in cursive with a digital pen a word that appeared on a computer screen.

The cap recorded electrical brain activity while participants carried out each task.

In the data, the researchers looked for coherence: two brain areas active with the same frequency of electrical waves at the same time. Scientists use brain activity to calculate coherence between brain areas, which can indicate how strongly those areas are connected.

Handwriting but not typing showed coherence. Relative to typing, handwriting increased activity in low-frequency alpha and theta waves in brain areas associated with learning, the team found. Handwriting also increased connectivity across central brain regions, many of which are implicated in memory, and across parietal regions, which are involved in sensory and motor processing.

The findings suggest that distinct processes of brain activation happen while a person types or writes. Even with very similar movements, “the activation seems much, much higher in handwriting,” Balasubramaniam says. “There’s more involvement of these brain regions when you’re handwriting”

Van der Meer and van der Weel think this boost may facilitate learning because these particular waves between these specific brain regions are implicated in memory formation. But since the study did not test whether participants remembered the words, it’s unclear how the increased activity impacts learning, says psychologist Kathleen Arnold of Radford University in Virginia. The study “warrants some follow up to see what exactly is causing those connectivity differences and whether or not they reflect learning outcomes.

Your World Depends On How You’re Wired

A neuroscientist studies what makes so many people prone to rigid ways of thinking.

By MATT RICHTEL

So sharp are partisan divisions these days that it can seem as if people are experiencing entirely different realities. Maybe they actually are, according to Leor Zmigrod, a neuroscientist and political psychologist at Cambridge University. In a new book, “The Ideological Brain: The Radical Science of Flexible Thinking.” Dr. Zmigrod explores the emerging evidence that brain physiology and biology help explain not just why people are prone to ideology but how they perceive and share information.

This conversation has been edited for clarity and brevity.

What is ideology?

It’s a narrative about how the world works and how it should work. This potentially could be the social world or the natural world. But it’s not just a story: It has really rigid prescriptions for how we should think, how we should act, how we should interact with other people. An ideology condemns any deviation from its prescribed rules.

You write that rigid thinking can be tempting. Why is that?

Ideologies satisfy the need to try to understand the world, to explain it. And they satisfy our need for connection, for community, for just a sense that we belong to something.

There’s also a resource question. Exploring the world is really cognitively expensive, and just exploiting known patterns and rules can seem to be the most efficient and strategy. Also, many people argue many ideologies will try to tell you adhering to rules is the only good way to live and to live morally.

I actually come at it from a different perspective: Ideologies numb our direct experience of the world. They narrow our capacity to adapt to the world, to understand evidence, to distinguish between credible evidence and not credible evidence. Ideologies are rarely, if ever, good.

In the book, you describe research showing that ideological thinkers can be less reliable narrators. Can you explain?

Remarkably, we can observe this effect in children. In the 1940s, Else Frenkel- Brunswik, a psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, interviewed hundreds of children and tested their levels of authoritarianism, like prejudice and whether they championed conformity and obedience or play and imagination. When children were told a story about new pupils at a fictional school and asked to recount the story later, there were significant differences in what the most prejudiced children remembered, as opposed to the most liberal children.

Liberal children tended to recall more accurately the ratio of desirable and undesirable traits in the characters of the story; their memories possessed greater fidelity to the story as it was originally told. In contrast, children who scored highly on prejudice strayed from the story; they highlighted or invented undesirable traits for the characters from ethnic minority backgrounds.

So, the memories of the most ideologically minded children incorporated fictions that confirmed their pre-existing biases. At the same time, there was also a tendency to occasionally parrot single phrases and details, rigidly mimicking the storyteller.

Molecule Offers New Hope on Alzheimer’s | Lens Neurofeedback Training

Memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients could be reversed following the discovery of a molecule that can rejuvenate the brain.

People with Alzheimer’s have low stores of the molecule, microRNA-132, especially in the brain’s hippocampus region, which is causing memory loss, a typical symptom of the disease.

Researchers from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience say that healthy people’s brains go through constant renewal, or neurogenesis, which allows us to maintain cognitive and memory abilities into old age.

But it’s a process that isn’t happening in Alzheimer’s patients, the researchers say, because they have low levels of the molecule, which appears to be the trigger for neurogenesis. In studies on neural stem cells, the researchers found that adding the molecule restored neurogenesis, and which suggests memory would also be improved.

Targeting the use of the molecule as a new therapy is a next stage, the researchers say.

Understanding Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that monitors brainwave activity and helps train the brain to achieve optimal states. By using real-time feedback, individuals can learn to regulate their brain function, enhancing relaxation and reducing stress—key contributors to sleep disorders.

How Neurofeedback Improves Sleep

1. Regulating Brainwave Activity – Neurofeedback helps balance brainwaves associated with relaxation and deep sleep, promoting a more restful night.

2. Reducing Stress and Anxiety – Chronic stress and anxiety often contribute to insomnia. Neurofeedback trains the brain to stay calm, making it easier to fall and stay asleep.

3. Enhancing Sleep Quality – Many individuals experience fragmented sleep. Neurofeedback helps improving sleep rhythms, ensuring deeper, more estorative rest.

4. Addressing Underlying Issues – Whether due to trauma, mental health conditions, or lifestyle factors, neurofeedback targets the root causes of insomnia, providing long-term relief.

A Natural Approach to Better Sleep

Unlike medication, neurofeedback offers a drug-free alternative with no side effects. With regular sessions, individuals can experience improved sleep patterns, waking up refreshed and energized.

If insomnia is affecting your daily life, consider neurofeedback as a safe and effective solution. Contact MindCareCenter to learn how neurofeedback can help you achieve better sleep and overall well-being.

From Timid to Warrior: Boosting Self-Esteem | Biofeedback Neurofeedback

Low self-esteem can be described as lacking self-confidence, and self-worth, in one’s abilities. So, how to transcend it, not let it hold us back?

My definition of a warrior is someone who acts in spite of fear. Fear is normal – even healthy when an action for survival is required. Too often, though, we live our lives in self-limiting ways, our potential undermined by various factors, causing us to see situations through the half-empty, rather than the half-full glass – dwelling on the negative, disregarding our achievements; thinking others are better than us; poor self-image; that we don’t deserve to enjoy; self-criticism; fear of making mistakes, avoid taking risks, fear of failure, or success, feelings of incompetence.

Many factors can cause or lead to low self-esteem: parental abuse, that is emotional, sexual, physical, neglect, parental or authority figure disapproval, (‘you’ll never amount to anything!’); bullying’ academic difficulties; social shaming, poor performance, poor body self-image; perception of not belonging; war; chronic stress.

The Vast Potential of the Vagus Nerve | LENS treatment in White Plains

Some say a cure for ailments like anxiety is flowing from the brain. But much is unknown.

By Christina Caron

In recent years, the vagus nerve has become an object of fascination, especially on social media. The vagal nerve fibers, which run from the brain to the abdomen, have been anointed by some influencers as the key to reducing anxiety, regulating the nervous system, and helping the body to relax.

TikTok videos with the hashtag “#vagusnerve” have been viewed more than 64 million times, and there are nearly 70,000 posts with the hashtag on Instagram. Some of the most popular ones feature simple hacks to “tone” or “reset” the vagus nerve, in which people plunge their faces into ice water or lie on their backs with ice packs on their chests.

Now, wellness companies have capitalized on the trend, offering products like vagus massage oil, pillow mists, and vibrating bracelets. These products claim to stimulate the nerve, but they have not been endorsed by the scientific community.

Fight or Flight Concept Updated | Remote Counseling in Paterson

The old concept of Fight or Flight was helpful in helping to explain the stress response. It’s just not good enough anymore.

Our nervous system is much more complex than that.

Hans Selye gave us his theory on stress and Walter Cannon gave us his concept of fight or flight.

They also talked about the autonomic nervous system with its sympathetic and para-sympathetic branches. The sympathetic speeding things up and the parasympathetic slowing things down. Sounds simple enough. It was relatively easy to explain the concept to people. But, it didn’t explain everything. It also led to some flawed thinking. Many people came to think that sympathetic activation was bad and would lead to negative health outcomes and parasympathetic activation was good and would always lead to positive health outcomes.

This is not a quote from a well know scientist but instead what old people | know used to say “Too much of one thing, is good for nothing”.

Too much sympathetic activation can lead to problems like anxiety and hypertension. Too much sympathetic activation can lead to problems like low energy, depression, and hypotension (low blood pressure). Another update has to do with additional Fs being added to the original Fight or Fight. Our reactions are not binary. Freezing is a third response. This is the deer in the headlights response or playing dead like an opossum. Sometimes not moving can be helpful. At other times it could be the worst thing for survival, Fawn is a new one for me.

Neurofeedback for Everyday Stress Management

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a constant companion for many. From work deadlines to personal responsibilities, managing stress effectively is crucial for maintaining mental and physical health. Neurofeedback, an innovative approach, offers a natural and empowering way to regulate stress levels and improve overall well-being.

What Is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that focuses on training the brain to optimize its activity. It involves monitoring brainwaves using specialized equipment and providing real-time feedback. This process helps the brain self-regulate, leading to improved focus, emotional balance, and stress reduction.

How Neurofeedback Reduces Stress

When you’re stressed, your brain’s activity can become imbalanced, often stuck in heightened states of alertness or overthinking. Neurofeedback identifies these patterns and trains the brain to shift into a calmer, more controlled state. Regular sessions can help individuals respond to stressors with greater resilience, reducing feelings of anxiety and overwhelm.

Benefits for Everyday Life

Enhanced Focus: Neurofeedback helps improve concentration, making it easier to tackle tasks without feeling overwhelmed.

Better Sleep: By calming the brain, it supports deeper, more restorative sleep.

Improved Emotional Regulation: It enables a steadier mood and reduces impulsive reactions to stress.

Long-Lasting Results: Unlike temporary stress relief techniques, neurofeedback creates lasting changes in brain function.

Take Control of Your Stress

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive and drug-free method that empowers individuals to take control of their mental health. Mind Care Center uses LENS Neurofeedback, providing personalized sessions tailored to your unique needs.

Mom’s voice loses its grip for teens | Biofeedback Ridgewood

As kids grow up, unfamiliar voices get more interesting

By Laura Sanders

Young kids’ brains are especially tuned to their mothers’ voices. Teenagers’ brains, in their typical rebellious glory, are most decidedly not.

That conclusion, reported on April 28 in the Journal of Neuroscience, may seem laughably obvious to parents of teens, including neuroscientist Daniel Abrams of Stanford University School of Medicine. “I have two teenaged boys myself, and it’s a kind of funny result,” he says.

But the finding may be deeper than a punch line. As kids grow up and expand their social connections beyond family, their brains need to be attuned to that growing world. “Just as an infant is tuned into a mom, adolescents have this whole other class of sounds and voices that they need to tune into,” Abrams says.

He and colleagues scanned the brains of 7 to 16-year-olds as they heard the voices of either their mothers or unfamiliar women. To focus the experiment on just the sound of a voice, the words spoken were gibberish.

Researchers who study the vagus nerve say that stimulating it with electrodes can potentially help improve mood and alleviate symptoms in those who suffer from treatment-resistant depression, among other ailments. But are there other ways to activate the vagus nerve? Who would benefit most from doing so? And what exactly is the vagus nerve, anyway? Here’s a look at what we know so far.

Meditation Reduces the Feeling of Pain | Lens Neurofeedback Training

Mindfulness meditation can help ease your pain.

The technique can reduce pain intensity by as much as 32 percent, a new study has discovered—and even people who haven’t meditated before can quickly achieve these benefits.

The key is in not associating with the pain, but instead observing it as if it was happening to someone else, say researchers from the University of California at San Diego.

They tested the benefits of mindfulness on a group of 40 volunteers, half of whom were taught the technique and the others were told just to relax.

When a painful heat was applied to the leg, the mindfulness group reported a 32 percent reduction in pain intensity and a 32 percent reduction in unpleasant feelings about the Pain, Compared to the relaxation group.

Brain scans endorsed the findings. Transmissions between different areas of the brain were reduced in the meditators. “For many people struggling with chronic pain, what often affects their quality of life most is not the pain itself but the mental suffering and frustration that comes with it,” said lead researcher Fadel Zeidan.

How Physical Health Impacts Mental Well-Being

The link between physical health and mental well-being is profound and undeniable. Our bodies and minds are intricately connected, and maintaining physical health is essential for nurturing mental wellness.

Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to boost mental health. Physical activity releases endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones, which help reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. Even moderate activities like walking or yoga can significantly elevate mood and overall mental clarity.

Nutrition also plays a crucial role in mental health. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids supports brain function and emotional stability. Foods high in sugar and processed ingredients, on the other hand, can negatively affect mood and cognitive function. Incorporating nutrient-dense foods such as leafy greens, nuts, and fish can enhance mental resilience and energy levels.

Adequate sleep is another cornerstone of mental health. Poor sleep patterns can lead to irritability, difficulty concentrating, and increased susceptibility to stress. Establishing a consistent sleep routine and creating a restful environment can improve both sleep quality and mental well-being.

The Role of Biofeedback in Managing Migraines

Migraines are debilitating headaches that can significantly impact one’s quality of life. Traditional treatments often include medication, but an increasing number of people are turning to biofeedback for a non-invasive and drug-free approach to managing migraines.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a therapeutic technique that trains individuals to control physiological processes that are typically involuntary, such as heart rate, muscle tension, and skin temperature. By using sensors and visual or auditory feedback, individuals learn to recognize and regulate these bodily functions, which can help in reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines.

How Biofeedback Helps with Migraines

  1. Muscle Relaxation: Tension in the neck and shoulders can trigger or exacerbate migraines. Biofeedback helps individuals learn to relax these muscles, reducing the likelihood of migraine onset.
  2. Stress Reduction: Stress is a common migraine trigger. Biofeedback techniques teach individuals how to manage stress more effectively, leading to fewer stress-induced migraines.
  3. Improved Blood Flow: Biofeedback can help individuals learn to increase blood flow to the extremities, which may help prevent migraines caused by constricted blood vessels.
  4. Enhanced Awareness: By becoming more aware of their physiological responses, individuals can identify early signs of a migraine and take preventive actions.
